Parent Mentors on Board and Ready to Begin

Parent Mentors Joy Bux (left) and Priscilla Cuba.
On November 1, 2004 SEDOL began its Parent Mentor Project with the assistance of a grant from the Illinois State Board of Education. The main objective was to provide training and technical assistance to parents and educators relating to the referral, identification and placement of children with special needs in special education programs.
Joy Bux and Priscilla Cuba — all parents of children with disabilities—were hired and trained in a variety of topics including special education law, policies and procedures, and conflict resolution. Since then, the Parent Mentors have facilitated trainings for both parents and educators regarding the importance of building positive relationships and how partnering with each other will ultimately help the child.
The Parent Mentors are organizing monthly training programs for the upcoming school year. (Watch the website for further details!) They continue to support positive parent/educator relationships by providing resources, IEP involvement and sometimes just a person to listen!
Funds for this project are provided through a joint effort of the Parent Mentor Project grant from the Illinois State Board of Education and matching funds from the Special Education District of Lake County. 100% of these funds are from federal sources.
